Readers' Top New Mysteries from the First Half of 2023

Posted by Cybil on June 13, 2023

Mysteries and thrillers have been among the most popular genres in publishing for several generations now. It’s a remarkably stable phenomenon, actually. Eras and fashions change, but people always want their whodunits. Thinky types have been debating exactly why for a long time now.

We’ve collected below the most popular new mysteries and thrillers from the first half of the year. These are ranked in order of overall popularity on Goodreads, as determined by overall reviews and which titles are winding up on Goodreaders’ Want to Read shelves. Each of the titles here enjoys a 3.5-star average rating or better.

Frankly, it’s a weird and mixed bag this year. Cozy mysteries have been on the upswing for a while, and there are some good ones here. Southern noir writer S.A. Cosby continues his hitting streak in that particular style. As a people, we continue to sublimate our fear of air travel, evidently.

If you tend to read a lot in this genre, feel free to speculate recklessly in the comments section. Have you noticed any particular trends or tendencies of late in the mystery/thriller arena? And if you come across any compelling mysteries below, you can tag them for later with the Want to Read button.

Let's talk mysteries in the comments below! What are you loving to read now?

Deborah Deborah Crombie recently released the newest in her London-based mystery series — . “A Killing of Innocents”. It’s a wonderful book, and a compelling series. If you are unfamiliar with Crombie’s work, please check it out, because I can’t imagine any mystery lover being disappointed. Great characters , plots, ambiance, and dialogue. Just so you know, these books would best be read in order. (I don’t see how to add my last name to my comment, so let me please clarify that I am Deborah G. recommending Deborah Crombie’s books.).

Marsha Where is Tana French? I have been hoping for an announcement of something new being published. I enjoy her books because they are well-written, intelligent, and character-driven. I like S A Cosby for the same reasons and am looking forward to his latest, ALL THE SINNERS BLEED.

A question, is Deborah Crombie and her series considered "cozy" mystery? Thanks Mike

message 5: by Joan (new)

Joan Bechtold No, her mysteries are really police procedural.

Jean I’ve been reading Peter Lovesey’s Peter Diamond series and am hooked. So far this year I’ve gone through the first 11. Best read in order.

Gastón Somebody recommend some unpredictable mystery books, some of these look so direct

message 8: by Nicholas (new)

Nicholas Foster 'Too Many Bones' by Ruth Sawtell Wallis is an unpredictable mystery. And it has an unusual setting. The Dell mapback edition has a great cover illustration.

There's no such thing as a 5 Star Gold Award.

message 10: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Can't wait to read "All the Sinners Bleed", adore S A Cosby's use of modern day Noir to create a tense & character driven storyline.

message 11: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn The Twyford Code was very interesting. The author spent considerable time creating this story.
