The Most Popular Debut Novels So Far This Year (Plus a Sneak Peek)

Posted by Cybil on March 21, 2023

Here at Goodreads World Headquarters, we like to keep track of new books and new authors. It’s always interesting to see how writers find their readership—and vice versa—and to watch for topics that capture the zeitgeist.

So we’ve gathered below the most popular debut novels of the year so far, for adults, across all genres. (Keep in mind that some authors may have seen publication before in different formats, like short stories or poetry.) Popularity, in this instance, is measured by a combination of star ratings and overall numbers of Goodreads regulars’ Want to Read shelves.

You’ll find all kinds of books in this batch—sci-fi, mystery, historical fiction—and plenty of rabbit holes in which to disappear. This is a good opportunity to go window-shopping, as it were. Click on the book cover images (some of which are decidedly compelling), and add any good leads to your own Want to Read shelf.

M J Hewitt I highly recommend any MJ Hewitt books. 'Secrets of Kharon' disturbing and memorable.

message 3: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Ascher I loved Liar, Dreamer, Thief. Surprised by its rating on here.

message 4: by Cosimo (new)

Cosimo Slowly, but surely, the male writers are disappearing from the face of the Earth - at least judging by the Goodreads selections. Lately, it seems the main criteria for these lists. :)

I loved "Liar, Dreamer, Thief" as well. And "Maame".

I hated "The Bandit Queens" and "The House in the Pines". Utterly boring...

Laura Just finished Beyond That, The Sea and loved it! Best book I've read this year.

message 17: by Gladys (new)

Gladys I highly recommend J.D. Barker's The Fourth Monkey. Written from 2 points of view (straight forward police procedure and a diary from the from the murderer) -- you'll want to know what comes next. This book does not disappoint.
