Discover the Biggest Mystery and Thriller Trends of 2023 with 84 New Books

Posted by Sharon on February 9, 2023

Here at Goodreads World Headquarters, we see a lot of mystery and thriller novels come down the pike. Like, a lot a lot. As such, we’ve developed a kind of sixth sense for spotting trends. It’s an occupational side effect, really.

We’ve gathered below precisely 84 new books—either recently released or on shelves soon—and divvied them into our officially identified trends of 2023. Some of these categories are broad in their scope (Quirky Detectives, say). Others are more specific to contemporary cultural concerns (Don’t Stay the Night and assorted vacation anxieties). Some are downright Freudian in their implications (Moms on a Rampage).

Some other highlights: Scorched Grace is the first novel from genre goddess Gillian Flynn’s new imprint. Colson Whitehead is coming back soon with Crook Manifesto, the follow-up to his insanely popular Harlem Shuffle. Then there is the indisputably well-named thriller Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone.

Oh, and one last pro tip: If you liked The House Guest, maybe try The Guest House. Or vice versa. Having a hard time keeping track? Try adding to that Want to Read shelf.

Quirky Detectives

Intrepid maids, tarot card readers, obituary writers, teachers, and…chain-smoking nuns? Sure, why not! These amateur sleuths bring unconventional points of view to their mystery-solving endeavors.
