60 Upcoming Books the Goodreads Editors Can't Wait to Read

Posted by Sharon on August 10, 2022

The common problem of "too many books, too little time" can reach truly dire proportions when you work on the Goodreads editorial team. After all, we get a sneak peek at tons of soon-to-be-published books and, contrary to popular belief, we do not get to read on the clock!

So we thought it would be fun for each of us to do a personal preview and share which upcoming titles publishing between September and December we're most excited to add to our teetering real-life Want to Read shelves before the end of the year. As always, we immediately ran into some overlap, so there's a whole category for "Books We Fought Over" as well. Team harmony restored, and more books for you! Win/win!

Scroll over the book covers to learn more about each title, and add the ones that pique your interest to your Want to Read shelf

Books We Fought Over

Our tastes on the editorial team are varied and wide-ranging, but these are the books that we all want to read. New Cormac McCarthy! New N.K. Jemisin! Butts!

Associate Editor Sharon Hsu's Picks

What's got me excited this fall? Historical fiction, Kingsolver-does-Dickens, and Melissa Clark's newest cookbook, which I've been impatiently waiting on since all the printed copies were lost at sea this spring.

Senior Editor Cybil Wallace's Picks

I'm taking my love of grazing across genres to a new level this season! From nonfiction to debut literary fiction, I am excited to fall into these pages...

Managing Editor Danny Feekes' Picks

A new novel following the trials and tribulations of Arthur Less? Incredible nonfiction? Our cups runneth over this fall. Beyond these, I’m looking forward to spending time with a few new-to-me debut authors. Happy reading!

Aida Motherthing's cover is stunning!

Joshua Sawyer This was awesome. How do people find out about upcoming books? Is there a website or two that gives us a clue regularly??

I used to find them through lists like this, and now through NetGalley, where you can sign up to get advanced reader copies to review :)

It really is! And the story is not what I expected, bizarre and brutal at points, but pretty good if you don't mind the topics.

There's this page on Goodreads where you can search for upcoming months' most anticipated books:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/popula...

message 6: by Dh (new)

Dh I'm thrilled to know there's a new Kate Atkinson and a new Sean Andrew Greer book about Less coming! I'm also looking forward to the new George Saunders, though I didn't think The Tenth of December was as good as his previous collections of short stories. But it was still good.

Liz What about Fredrick Backman’s The Winners??

message 8: by Mandel (new)

Mandel In what sense is Stacey Abrams writing as Selena Montgomery, if her real name is larger, higher, and much more noticeable than her pen name on the cover? I get why they did it - Abrams is, of course, much more well known under her real name than under her pen name. But it's funny to me that she hasn't simply dropped the pen name altogether...

message 9: by Janet (new)

Janet Martin Well, only a few of these appeal to me! I read at least 250 books a year, including lots of bestsellers. Sorry to say that probably no more than half a dozen of these will make it onto my list. I find that I'm most attracted to books that reach beyond the challenges facing a single character

This is honestly the site's most precious and useful feature for me personally. At the end of each month, I make sure to check what the upcoming three months have in store, in terms of books - and I find nearly all my reads through that feature. Don't ever take it away, please.

Tamara O'Shaughnessy I feel like Associate Editor Sharon Hsu and I could be reading buddies. She has an awesome list.

I thought the same thing!

message 13: by Steel (new)

Steel How is that the new Samanta Scweblin book, Seven Empty Houses, is not on these lists? Shameful.

message 14: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Chapman Never will I ever read anything by Stacy Abrams-NEVER.

message 15: by Crystal (new)

Crystal R. Martin No one has Brigid Kemmerer's "Defend The Dawn" on their list? It's out on the 20th, like thirteen days! It's my most anticipated of 2022....😅

I check the Barnes and Noble website. Under Books, find "Coming Soon."
