your stats

Posted by Ken-ichi on July 26, 2010
In case anyone missed it, we released a neat little graph a while back for tracking how many books or pages you read per year. It's a fun way to look back on what you've been reading.

If you click on a bar in the graph, you can view details for that year, including a distribution of your ratings and a break down of the shelves you used:

You can view anyone's stats on the site by going to their profile page and clicking the "Stats" link underneath their shelves.

Irwan Wow, this is a great functionality! Thanks to goodreads people :-)

Lavoie Lianne (The Towering Pile) Wow, this is an awesome feature! Thanks, Goodreads people!

message 4: by Firdaus (new)

Firdaus nice feature, really :)

message 5: by Ken-ichi (new)

Ken-ichi Thanks everyone. Frank, it pulls the dates from the "date read" field of your reviews, so you've probably only set that for 4 of your books.

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out Love this!

Caitlin (Ayashi) This is an awesome feature! Is there any way to force it to clear out its cache, or will it update automatically every once and a while? (I added a bunch of dates in for older books, but they are not showing up in the stats yet.)

message 8: by Ken-ichi (new)

Ken-ichi Sorry for the super-delayed response, Caitlin, but it should refresh every day.

No problem, thanks :D

jm2 I just read 14 books and my stats only indicate 13. However, when I select publication year view then go back to book view my stats indicate 14 as it should.

Any ideas?

Andrew Pages don't show up if you're reading ebook editions. It may be best to always choose the paperback version.

message 15: by crtlion (new)

crtlion Can you add in functionality to break it down by month? I'd love to see more detailed stats on my reading habits... without having to manually transfer and analyze the data myself.

message 16: by Seth (new)

Seth Add number of words to the stats!!

message 17: by Karen (new)

Karen How can you view this via the mobile app?

Michal Przybylowicz Is there any Stat that breaks down number of "reading sessions per day of the month" ?

message 19: by Jose (new)

Jose The Stats are not working. The only thing I got in the last week was the following message: "Goodreads request took too long.
The latest request to the Goodreads servers took too long to respond. We have been notified of the issue and are looking into it."

message 20: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Christine is it possible to add stats? Like, I want to see how many books i've read that were written by a woman or person of color. can i edit stats?

message 21: by Julie (new)

Julie My review stats for pages read don't match my "Year in Books" stats. (It's off by about 10,000 pages.) Are these actually measuring different things? I'd really like to know which is accurate. The number of books read is the same for both.

Lavoie Lianne (The Towering Pile) Julie wrote: "My review stats for pages read don't match my "Year in Books" stats. (It's off by about 10,000 pages.) Are these actually measuring different things? I'd really like to know which is accurate. The ..."

I wonder if editions might have something to do with that. What makes me think that is that I read the audiobook of Moby-Dick, so the edition I read has 0 pages, but it's listed as my longest book of the year (with 720 pages) on my Year in Books. My stats also differ, with my Year in Books saying I've read 25,433 pages and my stats page saying 22,486. That difference looks like it could be accounted for by my audiobooks. But your 10,000 page difference is pretty extreme!

I bet you're right Lianne. I read a lot of audiobooks this year and my longest book read was different between the two, perhaps because it was an audiobook (as listed on my "Year in Books"). That could explain it. Weird that it's counting those pages in one but not the other though.

Hmm...so I did an experiment to test your hypothesis. I changed the edition of a couple of the audiobooks I read from the audiobook to the Kindle, including my actual longest book of the year (RBG's biography). The number of pages I read did not change in my stats. However, the longest book read changed to the RBG biography! Now I'm truly stumped.

The stats page is only updated daily, so that's probably why you aren't seeing that update. I'm not sure about the Year in Books page, but I think it might be the same way. But it might update the longest book right away? Possibly?

message 26: by Heather (new)

Heather Purri I like the Publication Year graph, although I wish it included all the books we've read, not just this year's or just our books where we put in the date that we read them.

Julie You are correct! The page count updated the next day once I changed the editions from audiobooks. I contacted customer service, and this was the reply, which I will post here to assist future searchers:

"Thanks for writing in! We wanted to be sure that any audiobooks you’ve listened to, contribute to Your Year in Books in the same way that ebook and print books do. If you’ve completed an audiobook this year, we calculate the page count based on the primary edition of that book (usually a hardcover or paperback). If the audiobook is the primary edition of a work, we’ll use the next shortest book that you’ve read in 2018 for the Longest, Shortest, Pages Read, and Average Length sections of Your Year in Books for 2018.

While the Stats page uses the page count listed on the book, which can be significantly lower. The reason it is calculated differently is that we want to give our users the option to see both totals."

Thanks for the update, Julie!

Michael Wouldn't word count be a better metric than page count? I suspect length of a page varies greatly with formatting. Are there any plans to add additional metrics tracking word count?

message 30: by Björn (new)

Björn Nilsson I cant find the reading-stats. is that funcion still working?

Julie Björn wrote: "I cant find the reading-stats. is that funcion still working?"

It's in the upper right on the My Books page in small print between Settings and Print. You should be able to see it on the desktop version.

Or you can just click the hyperlink in the post above.

message 33: by Peter (new)

Peter When this feature was released, according to the screenshot above, it showed the proportion of books read per shelf. I don't see this now.

I've carefully avoided marking audio books as read - I created a read-audio-books shelf instead. But the stats just uses the Date Read and ignores shelves. I'd like to see a breakdown.

message 34: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I also miss the bookshelf distribution stat. It seems to have been replaced by "shortest book read"? But the bookshelf distribution lets you see some personalized stats depending on how you choose to use your bookshelves.

message 35: by Ken-ichi (new)

Ken-ichi I haven't worked at Goodreads for many years, but I doubt anyone from their support staff is reading the comments on this post. If you've found a bug or have suggestions for improving this feature, you're probably better off using the tools at https://help.goodreads.com/
