Announcing the Winners of the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards!

Posted by Danny on December 8, 2021

With more than 4.75 million votes cast and counted, the 13th Annual Goodreads Choice Awards are now official. Launched in 2009, the GCAs honor the year’s best books as decided by you, the readers.

Several tight races came down to the wire this year, playing out in the final days of the tally. The closest call was the Romance category, where People We Meet on Vacation narrowly took top honors over the also-beloved The Love Hypothesis. Similarly, perennial favorite Rick Riordan won Best Middle Grade & Children's book (for Daughter of the Deep), followed closely by Victoria Schwab’s Bridge of Souls. This makes Riordan the most decorated author in Goodreads Choice Awards history, with 11 wins.

Seventeen categories! Seventeen winners! Seventeen incredible books! Sincere congratulations to all the nominees—thank you for giving us another year of great reading. Thanks, too, to everyone who voted and all of the Goodreads community. And now, the winners of the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards…

Sara Darr Dominique wrote: "Truly wish I understood the hype for “People We Meet on Vacation”. “The Love Hypothesis” will always have my heart <3"

Read "People We Meet on Vacation". Agree that book wasn't worth the hype or the win.

message 64: by Diane (new)

Diane Collins Glad to see 2 of the books I read and nominated won! Congrats to the winners!!

Bettie Gerard Whoa! Would never have picked some of these!!!!

Completely agree with you here!

message 67: by Chris (new)

Chris Everson I am always struck by the nominations and winners. Do no males ever vote in these things?

message 69: by Cateline (new)

Cateline Meh.

message 70: by Suz (new)

Suz LOVED Project Hail Mary - glad it got recognition!

message 71: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Didn't vote this year as I hadn't read many. How can you vote one better than another if you haven't read them? A very flawed system!

message 72: by Judy (new)

Judy Sally Rooney is the most overrated writer in the world.

message 73: by Rudolph (new)

Rudolph Furtado Was there a difference between "Goodreads Choice Awards" and the best selling books in different categories according to box office sales ? Akin to a movie winning a "Oscar Award" but not the number 1 movie in terms of box office numbers.Congradulations to the winners.

message 74: by Julian (new)

Julian This list depresses me every year.

message 75: by Sumi (new)

Sumi Joshua wrote: "Most popular doesn’t mean best apparently."

Nope. A lot of these books were disappointing, ultra hyped books.

message 77: by Madalina (new)

Madalina Dima Marci wrote: "I really thought Cloud Cuckoo Land was gonna make this list 😱"

So do I.

message 78: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Empire Of Pain is astounding!

message 79: by Janitha (new)

Janitha I never realised people actually like fantasy more than any other genre.

message 80: by Teri (new)

Teri Donovan Joshua wrote: "Most popular doesn’t mean best apparently."

Amazingly, just because, in your opinion, a book is best, doesn't make it a fact.

message 81: by Erin (new)

Erin Clark The only one I read out of the list was 'The Last Thing He Told Me', and it no where near deserved that win... disappointing.

message 82: by Carole (new)

Carole Camille wrote: "And Malibu Rising? Wow Lol 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️"

What bothers me is this won over some powerful Historical Fiction novels. Malibu Rising doesn't even seem to fit the category of Historical Fiction. Yes, it takes place in the past, but where is the historical event around which the fictional story is shaped? I liked the book ok, but Historical Fiction book of the year? SMH

message 83: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Damn... The first year that the books I have voted for reached the shortlist this time, but none of them won, as always. Oh well, to each their own!

message 84: by Lissi (new)

Lissi The Anthropocene reviewed truly deserves this :)

message 85: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Joshua wrote: "Most popular doesn’t mean best apparently."

LOL yeah these awards mean nothing, really. This site is infested with bots anyway.

message 86: by D (new)

D Marci wrote: "I really thought Cloud Cuckoo Land was gonna make this list 😱"
