C. I'll be reading Malice by John Gwynne

Obviously what sci-fi & fantasy really need is to start featuring gay, black, Muslim, transgendered drag-queens or some political screeds that somehow manages to make the entire fantasy/sci-fi realm, totally infested with white privilege, in order to make the genre "fresh", "relevant" and woke.

Sugar Magnolia I'll be reading some Isaac Asimov.

message 104: by TK (new)

TK Fretresé I have a stack of Science Fiction and Fantasy books I'm making my way through. Currently, I'm reading Heir of Fire, by Sarah J. Maas.

I agree, the best fantasy book I read this year was a indie book by debut author. People will have no trouble finding the books on this list because they are everywhere, some of the indie writers could really use some of this love.

Ian Bott Urwa wrote: "do you know any blog/site that promotes indie/self-published books? i would love to discover them, sadly goodreads is my go-to place for book reccs, and its disappointing to hear that they only promote big names"

There are groups on Goodreads that do exactly that. There is a "Support for Indie Authors" group, and the related "SIA Showcase for Readers and Writers" where Indies can promote their work.

Cherry "Echoes of Gravity", book one of the "Tapache's Promise" trilogy by James Murdo. It's only been out a couple of weeks, and time constraints mean I'm not very likely to finish it this week, or indeed in the near future, but it's amazing!

message 119: by Monica (new)

message 125: by Linda (new)

I really enjoyed those books. I wish a new one would come out. Something about the worlds he creates, and he lack of violence or war, appeals to me.

message 126: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Satko Jane wrote: "Suggestions for comedy fantasy satire please."

Great question! I'm always looking for recommendations of that sort. Here are some I've found:
Terry Pratchett is always a must-read. If you've never read his books before "Guards! Guards!" or "Good Omens" would probably be the best starters, although "Men at Arms" is my personal favorite.
Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures aren't spectacular, but they're fun, funny, and fairly short.
The Princess Bride is probably the greatest humorous fantasy novel ever. Every bit as good as the movie.
Roald Dahl's children's novels are exceedingly morbid and funny. Matilda isn't strictly fantasy, but it's probably his best one.
Sean Gibson's The Part About the Dragon was (Mostly) True is highly funny, and, unlike the other books here, not mainstream.
More sci-fi than fantasy, but the Hitchhiker's Guide series are some of the funniest books ever written. Each book in the five book trilogy (yes, I wrote that correctly) is a decline in quality, but the first two are so good that any missteps later on can be mostly forgiven.
Lewis Carroll's Alice books still hold up as great humorous fantasy 150 years later.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is one of Mark Twain's funniest books, and one of his few legitimate fantasy novels.
I hope that helps!

I'm not familiar with Elantris, but the other two are, albeit ambitious, fabulous epics. I'm especially a fan of the LOTR trilogy. I read the series four or five times and anxiously awaited Peter Jackson's films.
I wouldn't mind seeing a similar treatment of Dune.
Enjoy the books. I sure did.
Cheers.

I loved the Andromeda Strain. Very smart writing. Another great one by Crichton is "Timeline". They also made a decent movie out of it.
Cheers.

message 138: by Curiosa (last edited Jul 16, 2021 02:34AM) (new)

Curiosa The Blackbox by Aditi Dhabu was the most original sci-fi I have read recently. Amazing concept!
Following this list for more suggestions.

message 139: by Shadow (new)

Shadow Dragon Self published authors like Daniel Schinhofen and Chris Vines, or classics like Asimov and Heinlein. in other words things i have in my kindle library or as audiobooks already.

As someone who is disabled and addicted to reading, and who is doing some writing as a therapeutic release, nothing worth publishing as i tend to borrow concepts from numerous sources and would not want to be a plaoerist. (spelling?)

message 141: by R.A. (last edited Jul 16, 2021 05:56AM) (new)

R.A. Morris Was hoping they would have more of a showcase of the increasingly important sub-genre of ecofiction and cli-fi (cli-fi is mentioned in the sub-genre page). Hoping for some attention to my speculative fiction novel: Beyond What Separates Us, which examines what future societies could look like if we continue on our path of ecological degradation.

Probably true but you have to remember that there are people out there who enjoy other types of fiction (and non-fiction) either as well as or instead of Sci-Fi/Fantasy. They deserve their place in the sun as well.

message 145: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry One thing I haven't seen is the usual list of the top 100 SF/Fantasy books. That was always good for some discussion (arguments?).

message 146: by Joy (new)

Joy Kaplan You should check out Susannah Welch's "Dance with the Wind" for Fantasy Week. It's part of this new series "City of Virtue & Vice." The second books comes out soon - so you'll be ready for it as soon as it's released!

M.E. Logan I've read comments about the trade and big boys sf books and moaning the fact that small press and indy books weren't mentioned. I haven't waded through all the comments but then Are are your favorite small press and indy science fiction books? What do you recommend?

I'm reading an indie UF series right now -- the Daniel Faust series by Craig Schaefer. If you like the darker side of UF, they're quite good. I'm on book 6 right now, The Castle Doctrine.

Nazri Noor is another good UF indie writer. I'm working my way through his Darkling Mage series, but he's got a lot of books available.

(Oops -- yeah, I know, not sf!)
