The Most Read Books on Goodreads in September

Posted by Danny on September 26, 2019
What's popular right now, you ask? Well, book club favorites like Where the Crawdad Sings, Little Fires Everywhere, and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine continue to reign supreme, but there's always room for a few new favorites. Making their debut on the list this month are Ruth Ware's latest mystery, as well as The Testatments, the highly anticipated sequel to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

Here at Goodreads we like to know what people are reading. From peeking at the books of our fellow commuters to not-so-surreptitiously checking out the stacks on our coworkers' desks, we embrace our curious nature. That's why we're rounding up what Goodreads members around the world are currently reading. These are the top books, ranked by the number of people who have read them this month.

I will honestly say that The Lovely Bones is one of the BEST books I have ever read (and I read A LOT)!!!"

I absolutely hated the book. It took me YEARS to read, and once I was finished with it, the book went into the donate box.

Peggy The Long Call - first in a new series by Anne Cleeves.
I've read all but four of the most read books of September, but one of those is on my to-read shelf (Testaments). I can't think I would enjoy anything by Elizabeth Gilbert. After her first self-aggravandisement work, I finally did give in and read her second at the recommendation of friends, and it was not bad. This newest one does not sound like anything I would enjoy.

or the national attention of a Nashville school actually banned the book!

Morgan I've only read 3 out of 20 books mentioned above. I better get going if I want to read what everyone else is reading. Or maybe not.....presently reading "The Malta Exchange" by Steve Berry.

Catherine Garcia Re: spike in Harry Potter, perhaps it’s for all the reasons listed above, plus - it could be the new HP AR game, Wizards Unite. I can say that’s what has HP on my mind almost daily now. ;)

Catherine Hickley Stephanie wrote: "Once again, not a single science fiction novel in here. These books also nearly all represent women's choices. If that's who is posting their reads, I guess not much choice, but it is disappointing..."

The post was made from statistics produced by Goodreads data- they can't exactly alter data to sway in favour of certain genres, can they?
Also, although certain books do market to females, to say an entire genre is gendered is just naïve

I am a mixed boat with her. I think she’s ok, but when I hit a reading rut I pick up one by her. I liked In a Dark Dark Wood, Cabin 10 was ok, lying Game was AWFUL, Mrs Westaway was my FAVORITE of hers.

Out of all, from best to worst

The death of Mrs Westaway
In a dark dark wood
Cabin 10
The Lying Game

message 76: by Amy (new)

Amy This month's reads had a lot of Japanese authors including Kokoro by Natsume Soseki, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami (actually STILL working through it after initially starting it in March). And then there's also The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas and One Kiss From You by Christina Dodd.

Rounding out the last few days of September with 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne and 1Q84.

You're not alone. I liked In a Dark, Dark Wood just well enough to give The Woman in Cabin 10 a try. And after reading that, I decided to just part ways with Ware. The setups are always great & kudos to her book summary writers because they make me want to read, but I've found her characters tedious and her endings a letdown. On the upside, she has lots of fans and doesn't need me. :)

From this list this month, I've read The Testaments and am probably going to choose a science fiction book as my next read.
