Calling all Writers for the Goodreads Status Update Writing Contest!

Posted by Jessica on February 18, 2009
As announced in our February newsletter, Goodreads is hosting its first ever Status Update Writing Contest. There are 10 days left - all official entries must be posted before March 1, 2009. Get those creative juices flowing!

The "status update" is the web's newest reinvention of communication. We want to know how creative writers can be when they are challenged to tell a story through multiple status updates over the course of a day, with only 140 characters to work with per post. You have to make every character count.

Also, due to popular demand, we've opened the contest to Twitter users. This means you can post your story via your Goodreads status updates or your Twitter account. Either way, you must join the contest group and post your story's start date & time. Twitter users: don't forget to start each tweet with #goodreads. This will help us find and read your story from start to finish. The contest group includes official rules, a step-by-step how-to for writers unfamiliar with status updates, and general food for thought.

Are you a reader, not a writer? You can also join the contest group if you simply want to follow the contest happenings. We'll post all the stories at the end of the contest and create a poll to select a winner!

Show us how much can happen within 140 characters! Good luck!

message 11: by Jcwillis53 (new)

Jcwillis53 Brown what is the link to join?

message 12: by Dolly (new)

Dolly Do you really have to do all the postings in just one day??!?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Can I start reading some of the stories NOW,-
are they openly posted somewhere?
Or, do I have to wait until the contest is over? :(

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Dolly:
From my understanding, yes, you have a 24 hour period to post your story. But, you can plan/write it in advance and then write the posts when you're ready to go. I understand only 140 words per post.
Any idea what you'd write about? I'm dying to see what everyone is furiously typing away at!
Annette

message 15: by Jcwillis53 (new)

Jcwillis53 Brown JESSICA,
this is something that I really want to do. Will the link be posted later? Or do I go to my individual status update and do it there??? Clear instructions will really be appreciated as I am brand new to this site. Thanks. Joyce

If you join the contest group:
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...

You will see instructions for how to enter, how to post status updates, and more.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

So many are confused at the format of how to enter the contest. Here's my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong. (Mine isn't ready to post yet-BUT SOON!)

You must be signed up as a Goodreads Member.
Click "groups" and add the Contest group to your list of groups.

Go to http//www.goodreads.com/topic/show/103553.E...

and click "Comment" to post the date and time you will start your story.

To POST your story, go to your home page, on the upper right of mine, it says "I'm currently reading..." and below that is a place to click "status update."

Your first post must start by saying, "Start Story: read my submission for the Goodreads Status Update Writing Contest"
then start your first post, and stay within 140 characters maximum per post.

When you are going to post your last part of your story, start by saying, "Stop Story: final post for the Goodreads Status Update Writing Contest"

PlEASE CORRECT ME IF THIS IS WRONG. IT IS THE BEST I COULD COME UP WITH AMONG THE MANY LINKS ALL OVER THE PLACE TRYING TO EXPLAIN HOW TO ENTER.

THANKS.

You go girl! (or boy, whatever the case may be!)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Not me

message 23: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Palmer so this is basically a very large roleplay?

message 24: by Jack (new)

Jack I'm powerless overdirections but I'll try!
oh thank you for yurhelp. Jack

message 25: by Tobi (new)

Tobi Obaro Annette wrote: "You go girl! (or boy, whatever the case may be!)"

lol

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll reiterate on Meghan's question-roleplay?
I thought it can be ANYTHING...haikus, other poetry,
a real story that just goes in spurts because of the limit of 140 words per post...
I read the example on another page...sounded like gobbledy gook to me. It can be "real" creative writing-of any type, right???

Tobi and Alex: can you give a hint at the type of writing you are doing?

Is there ANY way we can start reading these NOW?
Someone, puh-lease advise me on this. Thanks!

message 27: by Tobi (new)

Tobi Obaro Personally, I'm writing short stories on a werewolf. A little bit each day, like the thing said.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

A little bit each day? I think the directions are that we have a 24 hour window to get the story posts in, after noting our start time within the "Enter Contest."

I just want to find out how to find my story already posted...I've followed directions and not having luck. Any advise anyone?

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Jessica:
To read my story, I got to my status updates page, at
http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

All entries are there, but only two lines of each entry shows up with no "more" button to read the updates in their entirety. ADVISE PLEASE
I'd like to be sure I did this all right!
THANK YOU, Jessica

message 32: by emma (new)

emma this sounds stupid...
i dont get it!

message 33: by Tobi (new)

Tobi Obaro Oh yeah, mis read the instructions, I thought it meant a status change each day =P

Damn, all in one day huh? That sounds taxing.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Tobi:
I wrote mine ahead of time,
then submitted it all at one time, but
separated in a number of status updates.
No way I could sit on the computer for 24 hours
writing away...hope this helps.
Annette

well "roleplay" just entered my mind because that's what writing a story with multiple people is. That's what I do all the time, so that's what I thought *shrug*

message 40: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Meghan - you ask a valid question, but this contest is a little different than a roleplay. The stories do not interact. Your story is yours alone and does not have to reference the storytelling of anyone else in the contest.

message 41: by emma (new)

emma coolio

hm, that clears things up ^^ Thanks.

message 43: by Theron (new)

Theron can you fix something? please... or at hear me. The status character counter is wrong not to mention doesn't play nice with twitter. 140 characters when I start, 140 characters after I enter 1 character. Then there is twitter... the 140 characters that you have don't include "I'm on page XXX of Book Title." So the 140 characters is something less. It would be nice to have it accurately show the characters available. Thanks for listening.
