Only one book ever did that for me -- Amityville Horror! I read it at night and when I got ready for bed, I could not look in the mirror! Truly, was too freaked to look at myself in the mirror - didn't dare! :-)

Another suggestion: "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

Anushree A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay and Night Film by Marisha Pessl have my vote for horror reads without supernatural elements!

message 215: by D.J. (new)

D.J. Cowdall I published a couple of good horror stories for Halloween in recent times, perfect for the month.

A great horror book recommendation from me has to be Stephen King's The Stand. In its full uncut edition its very very long, but it gave me nightmares reading it and several times I had to put it down. Amazing though.

Abigail Listen to this
"I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me" Daddy check for monsters underneath his bed." I look underneath for his amusement, and see him, under the bed, starring back at me quivering and saying "Daddy, there is someone on my bed."
How is that for scary!!??

There's usually a link to the book on its page, and mostly have to be bought from usual ebook sites or book sellers.

Janice I skip 'em all.

Grace Olson Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is great for anyone who likes stories about mysterious monsters. It's mysterious horror, but is not outright horror. Not gory, the characters are great (Jacob and Emma are my children!), and it's a lot of fun.

Speaking of HP Lovecraft, JP Mac wrote something of a sequel to The Dunwich Horror called Hallow Mass and it's a really wild approach to Lovecraft's story. I've read it a few time already, but my problem is, I fall asleep too easily when I'm reading in bed, so it takes forever to get a story finished. With Halloween being just around the corner, I'm gonna give it another go.

The story's great. I just need to sleep in so I can read all night long. I need a week-long Long Weekend!
