I have heard that this is a really cool book. Have come very close to reading it a lot of times but always dropped it because I found some other book that interests me more

Pet Sematary by Stephen King scared the bejesus out of me.
But for me the scariest yet was the Stand.

The only one that really scared me was The Exorcist. I actually got cold prickles all over my skin at one of the scenes.

If you like or want to try comics Crossed, Vol. 1 and Outcast, Vol. 1: A Darkness Surrounds Him scared me quite a bit and I usually don’t get scared by fiction.

message 107: by Justine (new)

Justine I plan on reading From Hell by Alan Moore for Halloween!
I think The Accursed by Joyce Carol Oates is really good for this time of year, even if it may not be super scary for everyone; and, of course, Dracula!
Have a good time reading!!

Try something with a strong comedy component. Tend to blunt the scare.

I had only read 4 or 5 prior to this month. I've already read 3 this month (Full Dark No Stars, Misery, Sleeping Beauties) and am currently reading 3 more (Skeleton Crew, Christine, 11.22.63).

The movie is better than the book. Not often does this happen, except when the book is written by King.

message 114: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Have any horror passages?

message 115: by J (new)

J Mommy said there was no such thing as witches, but when I asked her where she went at night, she wouldn't tell me. I followed her into the woods without her knowing, and she was right; there were no witches around the tree in which she hanged herself.

message 116: by Yeukai (new)

message 123: by J (new)

J Try Teatro Grottesco, Thomas Ligotti.

message 124: by Antonio (last edited Oct 18, 2017 10:59AM) (new)

Antonio Heras "Otra vuelta de tuerca", aparte de ser una obra maestra, toca el género del terror y de lo sobrenatural de una manera magistral. Y el estilo de Henry James es preciso y precioso.

Hunter Williams H.P. Lovecraft has some good stories for Halloween. You can find some here. although reading the books in a dark room with little light is better.

Bruno Fernandes I suggest "To Watch You Bleed" by Jordon Greene.
One of my favourite books.
Doesn't have ghosts or gouls but will keep you in the edge of your seat the whole time!!!

I'm a scaredy-cat in real life but for some reason books just don't scare me. The only one I've ever read that truly scared me was Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I find suspense and the unknown to be far scarier than gore or jump scares, and this book is just that. Plus, it has a premise I've really never even heard of. It's just great - you should check it out.

message 144: by Robert (new)

Robert Smith A book that did scare me: The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus
Problem is that it is non-fiction. That is what made it really scary.

And a delightfully creepy fantasy story by Brandon Sanderson:
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell

Denise Lostaccount wrote: "If anyone knows a book that is truly scary, let me now. Never found a book that really scared me yet."
