Scientists at LIGO, a joint scientific collaboration of Caltech and MIT, have proven the existence of gravitational waves — strange ripples in space-time foreseen by Albert Einstein over a century ago in his enduring general theory of relativity and evidenced by LIGO‘s groundbreaking achievement. The discovery is heralded as "the breakthrough of the century" and a clear vindication for Einstein’s work.
Via remote feed from Amsterdam, CBS NEWS science and futurist contributor, Dr. Michio Kaku, joined LIGO scientist Duncan Brown on a live CBSN broadcast to explain what it all means and why it matters. Kaku proclaimed, "This is going to open up a whole new chapter in astronomy and cosmology," adding his assertion that the emergence of gravity-wave astronomy offers "a window on creation itself."WATCH NOW!
I have just recently finished "Hyperspace", maybe i read it in due time just in time to really give proper value to this astonishing news of the graviational waves.
I am merely a dabbler in theoretical physics. Which is why I appreciate authors like him (and Sagan and Hawking) who make it easy for me to understand what these discoveries mean.
I just finished Physics of the Impossible and Kaku mentioned that the discovery of gravitational waves will open a new field of Physics and Astronomy. Actually, Kip Throne mentioned that sometime between 2008 & 2030, gravitational waves from the Big Bang singularity will be discovered. Why it's only now?!
