WHAT IS THE HAPPINESS EQUATION?
Well, as many of you know, a year after my TED Talk, I met Leslie, fell in love again, and we got married. What you may not know is how on the flight home from our honeymoon, she wasn’t feeling well. During a layover in Malaysia she went to the pharmacy and we got on the plane and braced ourselves for a twelve-hour flight home. On the plane, Leslie went into the tiny bathroom, and then came to my seat and said: “I’m pregnant.” This is a selfie from the actual moment – sweaty foreheads and all:
As you can imagine, a ton of emotions smacked us like a rubber mallet to the forehead. For me, I felt a sudden deep desire to care and provide for this unborn child and make sure they live a happy and fulfilling life.
When the plane landed I was full of a new energy. I jumped out of bed and started writing every morning at 5:00am. Drawing new models. Combing studies. And combining everything I’d learned working for CEOs, interviewing artists and billionaires, and speaking with Royal Families, Ivy League Deans, and big companies like GE, Microsoft, and Samsung.
I put everything I had into one long letter to my child.
And nine months later, just before Leslie gave birth, I finished that 300-page letter and gave it the title 9 Secrets to living a happy life.
