Chapter 1

Amentia

The boy did not know what powers he was capable of. Nor did he know of the dangers he would put others in.  Nor did he know that he would be the greatest hero of all time.  In fact, Amentia Tolkson did not know he was anything at all.

All of Amentias troubles began when his parents died. Mr. And Mrs. Tolkson were always away, for reasons young Amentia did not know. On this particular trip, the ambitious couple was on their way to visit the elves of Unrei.  But sadly, their poor souls never made it.  A few days after the elves discovered the Tolksons disappearance, during an investigation, the elves found their dead bodies in the Twilight Forest.  From what they could tell, it had not been a happy ending.

So the elves made a visit to the Tolkson son, telling him all that had happened.  Amentia lived by himself, mourning for his loss before deciding to go up north to find work in the city.  This is where our story begins.  We find our hero talking to his fiancé, Aria in the small village of Normest.

“What will you do Amentia?” Aria asked him.  “I don’t know” Amentia sighed. “I will probably go into the Blacksmith industry. Father taught me a bit of it before he died.” Aria wiped away a tear. “I know you have to go,” she said sadly “but I will miss you so much!” Aria hugged Amentia. Amentia squeezed her and told himself not to cry.  And then an idea struck. “Perhaps you can join me Aria” Amentia said as they broke apart.  “We can get married, buy a house and start a family!” Aria smiled. “That would be nice,” she said wiping away her tears away. “I will go ask my parents right away!” “Meet me at the fountain tomorrow!”” Amentia shouted to her as she left.  Aria left waving and Amentia looked around.

He was making a big decision by taking Aria with him.  Amentia could hardly provide for himself, much less a family.  The young boy thought of possibly making Aria a beggar, much like himself. It has made him a disgrace.   Amentia had messy brown hair that desperately desired a combing.  Dull grey eyes spoke the sadness held inside of him which he dare not put into words.  His tall thin body wore a tunic which hung on rags on him.  How could possibly let this happen to Aria too?

Amentia’s thoughts were interrupted when he overheard a group of men talking.  Amentia scooted closer so that he could possibly hear what they were saying.  “The Terror has been at it again” one man grunted.  He had a red bandanna on his head and wore a vest. “My cousin from Cenovia said that the Daja have been burning crops and taking land from every one!” “Ay” said another “before long, they will get that here as well.  It will be more than just patrols and guards. They will be killing us in the streets!” Amentia shuddered. The Terror—Teron as he was called had been ruling Kalon as long as he could remember. The former king, King Briar had been rumored dead, and Teron had taken his place. He ruled Kalon with a firm hand which sent a fear down everyone.  No one ever even seen him, but they saw plenty of his solders—the Daja.  These Daja had yellow eyes –the sign of Teron. Anyone who tried to see his face never lived to tell the tale.

Amentia backed away.  He would have to avoid Cenovia, it was simply too risky, especially with Aria going with him. “If King Briar had not disappeared in the first place, we wouldn’t be in this mess” another man complained.  Sighing, Amentia left to take a walk.

The moaning of men sure didn’t help the situation Amentia thought.  Amentia pulled the remains of a breakfast from his pocket—a Tipp nut and banged it on a rock, breaking its shell.  Amentia removed the nut and plopped it into his mouth, letting its bitter flavor savor on his tongue for a moment, before it disappeared down his throat.  An aching hunger still bothered Amentia, but he knew of nothing else to do.   A few jingling coins in his pocket was all he had left.  How would he ever provide for Aria?  Amentia was left wondering.
