A few closing thoughts on Season 1 of The Expanse

Well, the first season finale aired last night, and now we have that illusion of a lull while the output of our labor coasts for a while and we knock our brains out doing the next season and the next novel and the next novella.

But still, it seemed like a good time for a few closing thoughts.

It’s an honor and a pleasure to work on the show.  The team on this was astounding, and the education was intense.  Alcon’s support and confidence through all this was invaluable.  Visual media and the storytelling that goes on there is fascinating and complex.  The management of a human mechanism with this many moving parts and one single purpose was like watching a brain from the inside.  The actors who’ve brought our characters (and a few extra besides) onto the screen were amazing and wonderful.  Even if this were the end of the project, I’d have nothing to complain about.

But it’s not the end of the project.

I owe a debt of gratitude to the fans and viewers who came to play, watched the show and talked about it with their friends and on social media.  That conversation is part of our zeitgeist, and we wouldn’t have managed what we’ve done so far without you.

And in that spirit, the critics and reviewers, too.  Even the ones who didn’t like it.  Having The Expanse also be part of conversations about translations between media, diversity, futurism, basic science, shifting paradigms of television distribution, and the history of filmed SF may be the most gratifying thing about this.

In the gap between the first season and the second, I hope the show finds even more of its audience.  For one thing, I think it rewatches/binges really well. I know I’m watching the whole damned thing this weekend.

And still, that said…

In the rollout of the show, I’ve been very active on social media.  Now that we’ve put on our play and taken our bows, I’m going to have to step back from the world a little and focus on some stuff that needs focusing on.  Someone will still have eyes on the accounts, and if something’s critical it’ll filter back to me.  Any big news, I’ll hop on and let y’all in on it.

Play safe.

[ED: A previous version credited Alcon with putting the team together, but Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company rightly pointed out that the core team — Mark, Hawk, and the books themselves — were facilitated by others even before Alcon signed on to back us all.  So a special thanks and acknowledgment to Jason Brown, the incomparable Sean Daniel, and Ben Cook]

Austin Fucking home run! You managed to change my whole opinion the "SyFi" network in one show. Cant wait to meet Bobbie. I vote for Gina Carano.

message 2: by Rob (new)

Rob I'm super impressed by the translation of the Expanse books to the screen. It's hands-down the best space sci-fi I've seen in a long time.. probably since Battlestar Galactica's heyday. Kudos to the production team, actors, and, of course, the book and script writers! I can't wait to see the next season and am crossing my fingers it keeps on going strong.

message 3: by Richard (new)

Richard UNBELIEVABLY fantastic job. I've been a fan of the books since the beginning, and this is the best possible adaptation I could have hoped for. It's insane that I basically know what's going to happen but am DYING for season 2. Good luck in the break!

message 4: by James (new)

James Hogeland I sincerely appreciate what you did on this series and hope for many more seasons to come. Great job and please don't stop doing what you are doing.

message 5: by Rpjunkie (new)

Rpjunkie Amen!, I watched the first 2 episodes, didn't know about the books, after i noticed, i have bought every book in the series out and read them all back to back! Amazing! Great job! Cannot wait till the next book out!

message 6: by Калоян (new)

Калоян I was a fan of the books before watching the TV series and now I'm a fan of the show too. It is so true to the spirit of the books and I'm amazed the team pulled it off. Faithful adaptations on screen are so rare and the Expanse deserves it. OK, I need to stop fangirling here. Can't wait for Season 2!

Galaxian0x4f The show is a fine implementation of the books. The actors got in the skin of their roles fast and then the show took off. I really hope the show continues to have support from fans and other significant factors, so that we can watch all the books of the series transferred to the screen. Kudos to you all.

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Really enjoyed the show, love the books! I hope with longer seasons you can fit more story into the show going forward because there is so much more to the characters and the stories are amazing. And I also cannot wait to meet Bobbie!

message 9: by Jason (new)

Jason Carter I know Bobbie is of Polynesian stock, but I've never been able to get Adrianne Palicki out of my head when picturing her. She's tall, kicks butt, and she already plays a character named Bobbi! It's fate, I tell ya--cast her!

That is hilarious, Jason, because I always picture her, too! I even hear her lines in Palicki's voice.

Weez I was pretty awesome to see one of my favorite books come to life. I think everyone did a bang up job. Keep it coming guys, can't wait for season 2.

message 12: by Rs (new)

Rs Just loved the show. Watched every episode at least twice. Well done everyone.

message 13: by André (new)

André Maccarini I'm looking forward to season 2. And please, make more episodes per season.

message 14: by Rob (new)

Rob I thought the TV series was excellent. It was what brought me to the novels (total newb here), and I'm loving what I've read thus far. Much love

I pictured Bobbie as a female Hafthor Julius Bjornsson. :-)

Agesi I saw the show which was good (but couldn't hear what they were saying most of the time) and in the middle of it, realised they were based on the books. That was a month ago and I'm finishing up Expanse #5. To say I enjoyed it, is an understatement. Its going to be great watching how it plays out in comparison to my imagination.
