The Divine Creative Source
Writer’s Block is Fear!As a creative person, I believe there is a creative source, or more accurately, multiple sources. A source from which when we are connected, things just flow, ideas, inspiration, all things creative.
Consider them something like spirits, gods or divine creative beings that have a message to share. Those of us that hear those messages have connected to them for whatever reason and are generally driven beyond understanding to create and express these ideas in a given form.
Who are these beings? Where do they reside? How do we connect with them?
Stephen King referred to his as “Gan” if I recall correctly, or at least that is how I interpret his explanation through his writings. Gan was a being from the primordial ooze from which the universe was created, I see that as good an explanation as any.
I don’t have a name for what I feel, I just know that when I am creating in the flow, inspiration and connections happen without my understanding. They move in and out of each other and sometimes without explanation connect in the most interesting of ways. It’s these moments where creating is the most fun for me, where the ideas seem to “come out of nowhere.”
For some reason many of us flounder with this connection. We let the fear of not doing it right or not being good enough keep us from staying connected. We hear it, we feel it, yet we don’t embrace it, or we wait, seeking perfection in our chosen means of expression before we feel we are ready to put it forth.
These creative sources, I believe, don’t just speak to one of us at a time, they speak to many of us. For each source, there are those among us that are on the same wavelength, we hear the same message, the same idea and we then interpret and hopefully express it. If WE don’t, someone else that is connected to the same source, surely will.
My point is, that these sources are feeding inspiration to creative people that are open to receive them, trying to bring these ideas and views to life in our world. Often times I see similar themes popping up in the media or in other’s writings. I see ideas similar but vastly different to ones I have had of my own, be it words or characters or entire storylines and I wonder how could so & so possibly have come up with such a similar same concept.
Take for instance our diamond pooping dog, Xanadu, in The Zee Brothers. Only a few months after publication I saw a similar line used in the comic book Stray Bullets. I know that the creator David Lapham, has not likely read our book and came up with the same concept in a different way that fit his story(not a dog, but a crazy human character). It was fascinating really, but also reinforced for me the concept of these creative entities that are out there trying to share inspiration with us, trying to help us create, and yes I did just tie the grand idea of creative divine beings all the way down to the lowest common denominator of “poop”.
As I have watched ideas similar to ones I myself have had come to life, I realized the lesson. The lesson being, that while I was waiting to be good enough to create them, these sources weren’t waiting on me to get their ideas out there, they were pushing them out there to all that will listen, and it is to those that are seizing the moment and creating and utilizing what they are given that the flow keeps coming.
If you are waiting for the exact right words or to learn everything you can before you create, you run the risk of missing your chance to share what is being given to you. Don’t wait, create. Right now!
For other writer’s out there, know that “Writer’s Block is Fear!” do not let it disconnect you from your creative source.
