The Importance of Winter SPF

Protecting yourself from unnecessary sun exposure should be a year-round practice. There is a common misconception that just because it’s cold outside, you can get away with wearing little or no sun protection. This is certainly not the case. In fact, changes in climate and our natural ozone patterns have actually raised the bar on the amount of sun protection needed on a daily basis. It doesn’t matter if you are skiing or playing in the snow; it’s always a good idea to wear sunscreen.

The amount of outdoor activities that people participate in generally declines with the degrees in temperature. So it may feel like you aren’t outside nearly as much as you are in the summer, but the truth just may surprise you.

Driving is still one of the most overlooked areas involving sunscreen and sun protection. Even in the winter months, we are extremely susceptible to sun exposure on our daily commute. It is a good idea to not only wear a moisturizer with SPF on your face, but also to wear it on other exposed areas of the body, such as your hands. Your hands are usually on the steering wheel, if you are the driver, therefore making them the most exposed area. Make sure to use a daily moisturizer with SPF, such as Essential-C Day Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This product gives the skin the moisture it needs as well as protection from the sun.

Winter weather also creates several reflective surfaces outdoors (such as snow and ice) that reflect the sun just as much as white sand on the beach. Make sure that you wear a daily SPF moisturizer on the face and the body when performing winter outdoor activities. Keep in mind that we still sweat—even when we are bundled up—so it’s better to use a sunscreen that is water resistant, such as Murad Water Resistant Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

Thinner skin on the face can also become extra dry and rough, so it is important to exfoliate and make sure to protect and prep the area thoroughly. Try using a gentle exfoliating cleanser like AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser to gently slough off dead skin and prep the skin for moisture. Apply Invisiblur™ Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 to prep the skin for makeup and protect it from sun exposure.

Colder weather doesn’t always mean less sun so make sure that you protect yourself from UVA and UVB rays year round. Fitting an adequate SPF into your skincare regimen is a must, no matter the temperature or weather conditions. Staying sun safe is as simple as using the right products!
