Deployment Stories: A Mother’s Promise

Deployment stories is a way for military spouses to connect with other spouse, encouraging and inspiring stories of trials and victories during deployment. Letting them know if this spouse can do it, I can do it! In this story, this is spouse is a mom to 3 children and her husband is in the navy. She shares a story about keeping her promise to her daughter starting school, while her spouse is on deployment.

Our oldest daughter was 5 years old the first time my husband went on deployment. We had just moved to CA and she was just starting Kindergarten so her separation anxiety was at an all time high. She made me promise that I would be there everyday to drop her off and pick her up from school. So of course I promised! A week after my husband left my car started acting up. Of course.

That day I dropped my daughter off for kindergarten like any other day, I had errands to run and was serving all day. It was getting close to time to pick her up so I headed to the school when my car died! I called road side assistance but they couldn’t get anyone out for an hour! My daughters school let out in 30 minutes. I tried calling everyone I knew at the time was 3 people! (LOL) but no one was available. Ten minutes went by and panic started to creep in. In that moment a Police officer pulled up behind me and I thought oh great that is all I need! Here I am stranded with my other daughter sleeping in the back seat, and had to be there to pick up my oldest in 20 minutes now. As the officer approached I started to cry! Which is so unlike me but I just felt overwhelmed!

The officer asks what was going on because I was impeding traffic. I told him what was happening. My car stalled, tow company coming (now 50 minutes wait), and I needed to be there to pick up my daughter! All while sobbing uncontrollably! He walked back to the squad car and I thought great, what now? When he comes back he tells me he called a local tow company and the guy would be here in 10 minutes, and now we had to get my daughter car seat and all into his squad car because he was going to take me to the school to get my daughter! I just hugged him! He looked at me and said he was a father and a husband and if he was ever unable to help his wife he would hope someone would extend the same kindness to them! I called the school and told them I was going to be late to pick up my daughter but to tell her I would be there! It was my first time riding in a squad car and the first time anyone had been dropped off at my daughters school in a squad car! (LOL).

In Conclusion: I got to keep my promise and now I have an awesome story to tell!
