Just reading ‘The Battle for John H. Watson’ by @silentauroriamthereal – about halfway through, at

“Just that bit about keeping John entertained, subtle as that had been. Perhaps that had been a thank you in a(n extremely) roundabout way. After all, that was what he had given them: another chance at having a life together, one not shadowed by Mary’s criminal record or the threat of exposure to the very authorities with which Sherlock and John have always aligned themselves.”

…and it’s just really, *really* brought home to me how Mary never said thank you. I must have watched HLV hundreds of times, I subscribe to M theory in its various iterations and think that Mary is going to turn out to be (more than) A Bit Not Good but it has never really *hit* me until now that she didn’t say thank you! (Also, did she ever even say thank you for Sherlock sorting their entire wedding? I can’t remember her doing so. I think she acted like she was doing Sherlock a massive favour by letting him do it.)

I absolutely despise Mary’s awful, patronising (and downright disturbing – head-tilt anyone?!) behaviour, but Moftiss’ lighthearted treatment of her and Mary’s cutesyness still manages to mislead me even now.

Mind boggled. Now back to the story (which is amazing btw) :)

Omg, thank you for this post!!! This is so cool! I’m terribly pleased that I’ve helped shed a bit of light on Mary for you! As I see it, Mary is already a long way beyond “a bit not good” - she shot someone in the heart and she did it without hesitation, without remorse, without apology, and then, when said person not only didn’t turn her in for her attempted murder, he also didn’t reveal her past to the police, AND he saved her from her blackmailer, and she not ONLY couldn’t be bothered to say thank you, but smugly rubbed it in his face that she was the one who got to stay behind with John. Even if she hadn’t shot Sherlock, I would have hated her just for that. She’s MEAN. And yeah - no, she didn’t thank Sherlock (on screen, in the actual canon) for doing the entire wedding, which normally the bridesmaids would have helped with, too, only they clearly didn’t if Sherlock and Janine only met for the first time at the wedding. Sherlock did it all.

I’m terribly pleased that you’re liking the fic so far!! I’m so glad it’s been thought-provoking enough to have inspired this post, whoo!
