I feel like DC fans try their best to vocal about things they like and dislike. But sometimes we feel that no one is listening, they don't really take the time out to really get us. How do we change that?
It’s true that most of the big companies don’t really have a ‘voice’ in the same way that they did under, say, Stan Lee, or the early days of Joe Quesada and Dan DiDio (I mean specifically a single company representative who relates to the questions of readers in a regular manner). Both Joe and Dan got promoted out of the position where they could comfortably do that, and truthfully, I miss it dearly.
It’s NO reflection on anyone at any company, I am not casting judgment, it’s just a thing I miss. Even when you disagreed, it was nice to have a voice and a recognizable face. I suspect that many factors are involved…changing corporate culture, an exponential increase in social media, many things like that. I know Tom Brevoort answers a lot of Marvel questions and I appreciate that. But I miss those unofficial spokespeople who were chatty and engaged, as well.
I feel it’s like losing the letters pages in comics. Yes, the internet makes them somewhat obsolete. But I think they created a sense of community, and a feeling of value, that is harder to define.
As for DC, because we don’t have that folksy voice, you can’t always know if they ARE responding. You have to wait months until the books come out. But I do know for a fact that DC does listen to the criticism. They may not always respond how you might hope, but they do listen.
