Excerpt from Biting the Vampire
Darius slipped back into the water, settled down near me, and considered me for a moment.
“What gave me away?”
I gave an affected shrug.
“I told you, I’ve known a vampire before. And I have sort of a sixth sense in spotting you guys. You give me goose bumps.”
I rubbed my arms as though to demonstrate, although in truth I didn’t have goose bumps at that moment. I did like the way his eyes followed my movements, though.
“It’s a primordial reaction,” he said. “Hardwired into your mind for survival. You notice things subconsciously, and your fight-or-flight response puts it together even when you’re not aware of what you saw.”
On the one hand, it made perfect sense. On the other…
“Then why do I want to neither fight nor flee right now?”
A smirk flirted on his lips.
“I don’t know. What is it you want to do, if not flee?”
I chuckled. “Oh, wrong question. Too many things to list.”
The smirk deepened. “Okay, what don’t you want right now?”
I thought about it, not because I didn’t know what I wanted to answer, but because I wasn’t sure it was a good idea, given what he was. There definitely were risks involved, but what can I say? I’ve always been a carpe-diem kind of gal.
“What I don’t want is for you to leave here without giving me at least two nice orgasms.”
Darius burst out laughing, and it was like a wave of warmth washing over me. I could see surprise and amusement in his eyes, but also a growing hunger.
“At least two, huh? Aren’t you a demanding little vixen.”
I grinned at the word and slid closer to him on the smooth concrete bench.
“You wouldn’t be the first one to call me that. But it’s not like it’d be a hardship for you to give them to me, would it?”
As I finished, I slipped a hand into his lap and rested it against his crotch. As I had suspected, I found firmness under his black swimming trunks.
“Or maybe it would be hard,” I mused, aware that it was a terrible pun but unable to resist.
When he laughed again, I melted a little more. He had a lovely laugh, deep and smooth, that seemed to echo over the water and vibrate down my spine.
“You’re a dangerous woman,” he said as he took hold of my hand.
At first I thought he was pushing my touch away, and I had a half-second of panic thinking I’d read his cues wrong. But no, he wasn’t pushing me back, just the opposite: a light tug, a lift from his other hand, a twist, and my body moved through the water toward him.
All I had to do was part my legs, and I settled in his lap. The concrete felt uncomfortable under my knees and legs, but I found it difficult to care about that when Darius was framing my face in his large hands and drawing me to him for a kiss.
