Collection’s Highlight: 18th Century Overdress
You could say I am over the moon about this overdress (HA! see what I did there?). I dont have too much information on this piece other than it is very clearly 18th century, and came from a family that had deep roots in the nearby Mohawk Valley. This overskirt has an underskirt in a lovely pink color. The silk is in amazing condition. I expected old silk to be very delicate, but this seems much sturdier than many of our late 19th/ early 20th century pieces. I assume this has something to do with how the silks were treated as chemical processes and dyes changed.
Overdress, ca. 1770, Silk, L 49 in. Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, New York, Gift of Mrs. Douglas Robinson, N0210.1962.
Love the flowers and colours!
