I think my resentment towards marriage comes from the way us brown girls are told to perceive it. Its not seen as something beautiful, two souls uniting. Rather a contract. You’re a responsibility of your family, carrying their honour and one day you will be handed to another man and his family and then you will be his responsibility and carry his honour. Its like you’re chained to men all your life and that’s all you’re worth. This culture suffocates women with its crazy ideals and I don’t want to be a part of it.
