I’m a “Real” Fan of Star Trek…and That’s Not a Good Thing.

I ranted on Chuck’s Facebook thread (sorry, Chuck…) concerning yet another dust-up over Star Wars. Thing is, this brouhaha brought up a few memories worth sharing. These are memories about me being a hardcore fan of Star Wars and Star Trek, and about hardcore fans of Doctor Who

…and how that can sometimes be a problem.

See, what’s happening within the Star Wars fandom—in the wake of other “real fan” movements—is nothing new. It’s just more public. “Real” fans who draw lines in the sand, pis...

Marcel I like Star Trek, I watched ST:TNG when it first aired on tv, I tried to follow DS9, and even VOY and Enterprise were watched by me. And while I do agree with the 'real' fans that the new movies don't hold a candle to 'old' Trek. I like the movies. They are great fun to watch. Just don't compare them to TOS or TNG. Yes, the stories have flaws, and they pull their punches. But it's a fun way to spend an evening in the cinema or on Netflix.

Personally, I didn't like the Star Wars prequel trilogy, because mostly there was not much of a story there. And the hype around it before its release destroyed it even harder.
A wooden, stilted whiny Anakin, whom I hoped would die already. A Padme who turned from a powerful and strong queen to a weak and pregnant ex-senator. And a stupid racist character called Jar Jar Binks. And stuff about midichlorians.
Yes, there was a lot of spectacle, but it had little content. And none of it became canon for me, personally. But if someone likes those movies, I can only be happy for them.

I did love the old Star Wars movies.

And I love new-Who, never got into old-Who. And I also liked the Fox-movie, though I do understand the qualms that old-Who fans have with the story. Making the Doctor half-human is a hard pill to swallow, if all you've heard before was that he was full Gallifreyan. Though it would explain why he protects Earth so much.

But I'll never tell someone they're not a real fan, if they like something I don't. Because that's just a dick-move. Not everyone has to like the same things as you. Reversely, if people call me 'not a Real Fan' or that I like the wrong things; those people get tossed to the side by me. I have no time for those types of people.

I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with you.
