Help is on the way for Darien - running from a bar shooting.
When his lungs complained they'd burst if he didn't stop and catch his breath, Darien ducked into a dark doorway, leaned back, and gulped mouthfuls of air. He jumped when his cellphone vibrated against his backside. He tapped the screen and lifted it to his ear."Where the hell are you?" Brian's voice was tense. "I can't see you. It's a riot out here. People are panicking all over the place.""I had to run…they…the guys showed up and started shooting.""What the fuck have you gotten yourself into this time?"Darien gripped his cell. "Nothin’. I fucking didn't do nothin’.""Calm down. Where are you?""In a doorway.""Not a lot of help, dude, coupla million doorways in Bangkok. Narrow it down for me."The smart-aleck tone of his brother's voice somehow had a calming effect on Darien's jangled nerves. "Uh, I'm up the street from the Peacock. I think I'm still going east.""Look around, can you see the Two-Headed Serpent.""What is it with this city and bizarre animals?"His brother's chuckle was salve on a cut. "Who knows. The club owners think the names are sexy."Darien leaned forward and twisted his neck right and left. "Nope. No two headed serpents. Coupla shitty-looking hookers, that's it.""Okay. So you haven't made it to the Serpent. I must just be a block behind you. I'll drive slow. You flag me down.""Hurry.""Can't drive slow and hurry at the same time.""Screw you and just get here." Darien rammed his finger against the end button and stuffed his phone in his back pocket. Crossing his arms, he leaned his shoulder against the doorway, doing his best to appear calm, bored and in no way involved in two club shootings.His brother's bright yellow Hummer slowed down. Darien grimaced. Great. How do I look invisible while getting into a bloated canary? He bolted to the car, jerked the door open, slammed it shut and slid low. "Drive. Get me outta here."
