Thomas Stroemquist While I agree with a lot of points, I would say that this is not the way I use this particular site. The ambitious goals of review-writing set here are surely fine for a reviewer for a magazine or paper, but on Goodreads? Why would we need hundreds of reviews that feature a brief plot summary, an overview of characters etc.?

I'd say Goodreads reviews are much more personal opinion than 'objective' critique and I often appreciate the biased, the low-rating-on-account-of-a-simple-hangup, the one-sentence and the praising reviews equally because of what I know about/read from/discussed with the person doing the review. And I just love when personal stuff that has nothing to do with the book takes up most of the text :-)
