The Reichenbach Fall vs His Last Vow
FUCK MARY FOR PUTTING HIM THROUGH THAT AGAIN. LOOK AT JOHN’S FACE. LOOK AT THAT PAIN AND DESPAIR. LOOK HOW HELPLESS HE FEELS BECAUSE HE’S ABOUT TO LOSE SHERLOCK AGAIN. HOW DARE SHE PUT HIM THROUGH THAT. THE SURGERY THING IS BULLSHIT SHERLOCK FLATLINED. HE DIED. “Two years. I thought… I thought… you were dead. Hm. Now, you let me grieve.“ MARY WAS WILLING TO LET JOHN GRIEVE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE ALL BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T WANT HIM TO LEAVE HER. FUCK MARY.
I have pretty much stayed away from making comments about Mary, in either direction, for quite some time. The topic of ‘Mary’ is a real hot button topic in our fandom, one that I prefer to let be - not in the sense that I don’t think about it, but that I don’t actively engage in the debate of the topic.
But this gifset really struck a cord in me. Really looking at this gifset puts this into perspective for me. Looking at this makes it really, really hard for me to feel any sympathy for Mary or understand how anyone else truly could.
Mary knows exactly what John went through after TRF. There is no doubt in my mind that he also shared things with her, she helped him grieve, she witnessed first hand the after effects of the fall, knew that this man was almost destroyed by this event - and then, for [insert reason of your choice here, there’s plenty to choose from,] she makes the choice to shoot Sherlock, knowing that if Sherlock died what it would do to John.
Whether or not Mary intended to kill Sherlock is not important. What you should be looking at is the true underlying intent behind Mary’s choice - and that is whether or not she was willing/capable/ready to accept and deal with the fall out of her choice - part of accepting that choice is the knowledge of John never being the same again. She was willing to take that risk. Otherwise she would not have pulled the trigger! When she chose to pull the trigger, she knew damn well she was taking that risk - and she was okay with that.
And that is why I simply can not have any sympathy for Mary.
BEAUTIFULL
Perfectly said! Say Amen on a Sunday.
All of this. Yes. Word.
