To E or not to E! That is the Question

I need your opinions, whether you read e-books or not. I have seven books that have long been out of print and I’ve now made four of them (Secret Lives, Reflection, Brass Ring and The Escape Artist) available as e-books. Very soon, I’ll have a fifth book up (Fire and Rain). Now I’m trying to decide whether or not to make my first two novels, Private Relations and Lovers and Strangers, also available, and that’s where I can use your honest thoughts.

The reason for my hesitation is that they are quite different from my other books. Although they’re not what you’d think of as traditional romances, they have much stronger romantic elements than my other books–particularly Private Relations, which won the RITA award (from Romance Writers of America) for the Best Single Title Contemporary Novel of. . . gulp. . . 1989. I was so young and such a green writer! I am extremely proud of that book as well as of Lovers and Strangers because I know I put my heart and soul into them, but as I said, they are different. Starting with my third novel, Secret Lives, I think my books grew into deeper stories with richer characters and stronger elements of mystery and suspense.

What do you think I should do? Make these two early books available for e-readers or let them stay as the impossible-to-find little paperbacks they’ve been for many years? I’d love to hear your opinions. I know you have them, so bring ‘em on!

Ruth I'm not to fond of the e-book. But who am I to say if you should go E all the way ;-)

Krista I hate to admit this...I have a Nook, a Kindle AND an iPad lol so obviously I like the e-book. Your books are great and I would love to read those first 2 also. I just finished The Shadow Wife....awesome book!

Vivian I only read fiction in ebook format. I'm currently on my second ereader (another Sony) and currently have over 1700 titles on my Sony Touch. Needless to say I'm always glad when favorite authors make older titles available and try to snap them as quickly as possible. So my vote is a definite YES! to making these titles available in ebook format (preferably in ePub or PDF so that more folks with ereaders and ereader apps can access them as opposed to only available at Amazon.com).

Megan Tiscareno Yes, yes, yes. I would definitely buy them. I love ebooks, but that doesn't stop me from reading regular books as well. I love being able to find otherwise unavailable books on ebooks-- even better.

Marcia Please go for it! Like Krista above, I have a Nook (a gift from a friend), a Kindle (couldn't resist it), and an iPad (happy birthday to me from me). I read on all three (Kindle being my favorite eBook reader) and really like being able to get older titles that aren't readily available in stores or online. I'm still an obsessive book buyer and library borrower. For me, it's all about the book, not the method of delivery.

Tina Yes please! I traded in my Kindle for an iPad but still have the Kindle app on it...love to read the early works!

Marcia....I too like my Kindle the most. I don't know if it is because I had that first? But like you I still buy books....Wayyyyyyyyy too many sometimes!!! lol my to read list is just books I have physically, not my e-reader books! I have to say I agree 100000000% that it is about the book, and as long as I can read a good book, I don't really care how I get to read it. There are certain authors I keep their books tho....and being a book addict doesn't help! lol

Jennifer Kidd Yes! I have a Nook and I love it!!

message 9: by Cathey (new)

Cathey I have owned a Nook since Christmas and am addicted! I just put LIES WE TOLD on my wish list! I hope you will put your early books in e format! Love all your books!!!

Donna I say, go for it! I just finished "Breaking the Silence". I cant get enough of your books! I buy them any time i see you. I currently dont have a Nook or Kindle - but I am wishing for an IPad - so i say, go for it...your fans will love to read your earlier books!

Ellen I've got a kindle which is very exciting but I'm finding that I have to make some serious adjustments to my reading style-it is a more different experience that the book as object than I expected. But I adore buying books for it!
So you may find sales going up-probably will in fact-& many people, including me, would be happy to see all your books available as e-texts.
That being said, I have to admit that I also really like the idea of old, hard-to-find paperbacks floating around, unbacked by e-versions. It's almost like little treasures (or not so little) & I find it exciting trying to track down books like these. They have a value, emotionally-laden, that an e-book just can't have.
So, impractically & against my own interests, I hope you don't "ebook all the way"! :D

message 12: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Yes please do make them available as e-books! I absolutely love my kindle and I spend atleast an hour a day reading on it. It does not deter me from buying paperback books, however, it's nice to have a new book at my reach at 2am when I finish whatever current selection I may be reading. I would love to see any and all of your work in this format :)

message 13: by Jamaie (new)

Jamaie I have a Kindle and a Kobo. I've been uploading to the Kobo lately. I also own about 400 paper books, so yes, I also read paper books. I am literally addicted to books.

message 14: by Jo (new)

Jo I have a kindle and I'd be over the moon to read these early titles of your Diane. Even though they were written before you found your suspense groove as a writer, you wrote them so we want to read them! And one of them won a RITA! Awesome! Well, come on! Do the E :)

message 15: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn honestly, if you don't make them ebooks, I probably will not read them. I own Kindle and I love it.... I spend more on books now, than I used to. :) I find actual books hard for me to hold now. my wrists ache for days after trying to hold a book. and I find the kindle easier on my eyes as well. :)

Bluejay44 yes please, now that I have a kindle I only buy ebooks.
Still have shelves of paper books, many unread or out of print, special interest books - they will gradually be whittled down so that I only keep ones that are irreplaceable.
From now on my library travels with me, with backups (Non Amazon) being kept on a portable hard drive. That way hopefully they are safe for the future, even if I have to downsize into a much smaller home or even residential care. LOL as long as my eyesight holds up I will have plenty to read.

Having read some other posts here - either in multi format or DRM free so that they are available to all ereaders.

Denise Yes! I only buy eBooks and hate that there are books of yours that I have no read! :)
