Before Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson,...
Before Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson, before Chuck Jones and Jackie Chan, there was Buster Keaton, one of the founding fathers of visual comedy. And nearly 100 years after he first appeared onscreen, we’re still learning from him. Today, I’d like to talk about the artistry (and the thinking) behind his gags. I have been full-blown obsessed with physical comedy since I was 14 and sometimes when I watch Keaton I want to cry because he’s so fucking good. Rarely do Cracked videos call for anything physical, but you can see me sneaking stuff in whenever I can (mostly in Agents of Cracked).
For a recent bit of physical comedy, watch the latest episode of Fargo. Drunk Nick Offerman goes to rest his elbow on the desk at the police station but undershoots it by like four inches, falls, gets caught by Lou and then immediately slaps Lou off as a nuisance. It’s pretty perfect.
