New SF book - first draft
Just a quick update:
The Tau Device has reached first draft. It's based on my novella Lory Gato, Interstellar Gourmet, comes to 82k words and I'll be using Stephen Cashmore of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders to edit it. A synopsis is:
Lory Gato enjoys a privileged life, hopping from world to world, sending reports of his gourmet experiences to those back home, who can't afford the stars. He gets sent to T'negi 36, an out of the way planet where humans have a small presence. T'negi 36 is nearly airless and it'll be a long time before 36 is fit to live on. As new kids on the galactic block - humanity get the scraps. Like any self-respecting businessman, Lory is a socialiser but the few bars on T'negi 36 are closed. There's been problems with humans which the t'negi, like good hosts, try to gloss over. He arranges to meet a t'negi xeno-archaeologist, Liasse, who is researching a long dead civilisation. She believes whatever destroyed it is still a threat.
Lory has a run in with Earthers - humans who believe their manifest destiny is to (somehow) overthrow alien civilisations, steal alien terraforming technology and colonise.
The technology that powers interstellar civilisation suddenly fails... then it turns out that the Earthers have powerful allies. Lory and Liasse are thrown together in a desperate bid to survive.
For legacy reasons I have two blogs on Goodreads. This one which was created under my original online byline: TP Archie, and that from when I decided I ought to write under my real name. Here's the cross-link to my earlier update on The Tau Device.
Other recent pieces:
Walkers - a dystopian view of the UK's future where the unemployed and the unwanted walk the motorways looking for a Migrant Centre to accept them
Into The Abyss - flash fiction
By Design Poem on Space and Time
Kitten's Play - a take on the under reported activity of child stealing (in the C20th). Includes autobiographical elements.
