The Project

myqueerfamily:

Hello. My name is Kaden. I am a 22-year old transgender male. I have a 2-year old child, and one of my greatest endeavors is to teach him about the world.

In that endeavor, I often take him to our public library. He runs around being a 2-year old and I look at which books I should read to him next.

Well, to get to the point, I discovered that my local library does not have any books about families that are not cisgender.

So, being a resourceful individual, I’ve decided that I want to make one! Which is where I need your help.

I want pictures of YOUR queer family. (Tag your pictures with “My Queer Family”)

Some groups I’d really like to have represented, besides being queer:

-POC, indigenous people (basically, lots of non-white people)

-Differently abled people

-Families with more or less than 2 parents

-Families with multiple non-cisgender members

-Older queer families

With your picture please include a short story about your family. You can tell me how you became a family, what you like most about your family, what your family traditions are, etc. I especially want to hear from the children, as this project is really for them.

When I have a dozen or so pictures and stories gathered together I’m going to create a children’s book.

Once the children’s book has been created, I’m going to see if I can find a publisher who will make the books for free. If not, I’m going to start a Kickstarter to raise the funds to publish the book.

Then, I want to give this book away to every library and school in the United States. I want every child in the country (and eventually the world, but we’ll get there) to be able to see diverse families. I want them to see that families all look different, and that it is okay if their family is different from their friends’ families.
