Agent Query v10 - The Kite and the Coin Toss
Version 10
July 2, 1782
Benjamin Franklin hung from the end of his noose. His son William watched on until his feet stopped swaying. Benjamin and fellow independence declaring rebels met their ends en masse in a royal ceremony christened The Signers’ Day of Reckoning.
October 14, 2011
Joshua Franks works as a scientist in a royally sanctioned lightning lab. The lab’s goal is to tap into lightning and provide an alternative energy source. He aspires to illuminate villages like Cloister where his parents live. These villages stand in destitute and dark contrast to the royal cities they surround and support.
Then Joshua discovers he can send messages back in time via the lightning in the lab. The breakthrough reaches the sanctioning ears of the king who secures the knowledge and twists the lab’s objectives to his sole advantage. The most powerful person in the world seeks literal world rule, and Joshua provided him the means, his knowledge leaving him the king's most valuable asset and largest threat.
On Joshua’s twenty-first birthday his parents pass on to him their most valuable possession, the Frank’s secret ancestry. Joshua learns he is a descendent of Benjamin Franklin. Among other historical truths, he learns his newfound forefather once sailed a kite in a lightning storm. The gift inspires Joshua into action. He must get a message, via lightning, to Mr. Franklin before the crown executes the revolutionist and before the present crown executes him.
More than two centuries stand between Joshua Franks and Benjamin Franklin. But Joshua must risk everything and reach back in the past to provide any hope for freedom in the future, even if that future does not include him.
The Kite and the Coin Toss is a 100,000 word thriller, an alternative history novel like Fatherland. A manuscript is available in part or full upon request.
