And Then I Read: THE FLASH 5

Can a superhero slugfest still be fun? After reading the last few crossover series, I might have said no, but Barry "The Flash" Allen against his Rogues Gallery? Yes, fun. Okay, it's a little more complicated than that…there are two Rogues Galleries, one from the future aiming to arrest Barry for a crime he didn't even commit yet, the other the originals mostly. Geoff Johns shows his love for the old FLASH comics by Broome and Infantino throughout this run, and the battle here is classic. And where things end up is also reminiscent of the past, but in a way that makes me want to see more. Okay, I'm way behind in my comics reading, but whatever FLASHPOINT turns out to be, in this moment FLASH is fun.

The art by Francis Manapul continues to delight me with its stylish gray wash watercolor approach that would seem to work against a super-speed character, but somehow does not. Perhaps it's the contrast from the more typical hard-line inking usually seen on such characters, but I really like it.

Highly recommended!
