I should have written this review a month ago when it was all fresh in my mind. At least now I understand why many people don’t write reviews.
The beginning of the story, when the narrator is in New York working at a publishing house, did not pull me in. Luckily, many months later, I picked up the book again and got pulled right into the story that the narrator is reading.
Then when the narrator goes back to the area where she grew up, to look for the writer of the “found manuscript” that shows up a chapter or two at a time, the mystery really takes off. There were many interesting characters in the story and the comparison of some wealthy people with the narrator’s own family living in abject poverty was very interesting.
There were so many facets to this story that I stayed up several nights into the wee morning as I couldn’t put it down. I have never read a book like this that was almost four stories within a story and, being an author myself, I know that this is very hard to pull off.
Lisa Wingate deserves all the accolades she can get for this excellent read that also helps the reader learn about some areas and history that many of us have never been exposed to before.
Bravo! I look forward to reading her other novels.
P.S. I have noticed a new “genre” called Adult Fiction. I am curious what exactly this means: sex & violence? sex? Not for children? Or is it something else entirely?
Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Peace,
Sherrie
