Clean Room #1 Review by Chris McCallionThe opening to writer Gail Simone’s Vertigo series debut sets the tone for what’s to come and it’s equal parts compelling, intriguing and creepy. The events that transpire in the introduction are left hanging while the story moves onto a different scene entirely while still maintaining the eerie atmosphere. Here, main protagonist Chloe is introduced at a low point in her life as she struggles to come to grips with her fiancés suicide and why it happened so suddenly under curious circumstances. However, Chloe has a few ideas of what might be going on and the book moves forward as she continues to investigate. Chloe is a wonderfully flawed character who is introduced at her worst but is shown to be incredibly driven to discover what demons plagued her fiancé while trying to keep her own at bay. The art and colour on display, both provided by Jon Davis-Hunt, does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and manages to bring true emotions to the characters on each page. This is especially true of the previously mentioned creepy scenes, made even more so by the choice of using quite a vibrant colour palate which seems at odds with the subject matter but only results in enhancing it. This is an excellent opening chapter with solid art and enough story and development present to get hooked into this mysterious and twisted new series.
