When I see those posts that are like “My artist friend never thinks they’re good enough, but I keep telling them they are!” or a recent one where someone super buff was lifting weights, saying “I’m still so weak” and was tagged “artists”, I feel pressed to ask:

But do you know why artists do that?

Where did the self depreciation come from? The aggressive competitiveness and need to outdo themselves? I mean, personal issues and built in anxiety or perfectionism aside?

It’s because it’s super hard to succeed in art, which is, on an industrial level, exploiting and poorly paying, so you have to be the very best to get in, and moreover, you’re in a society that constantly tells you that your work isn’t worth their money, that it’s not a real job. So you enslave, day and night, desperate to compensate for it so people will go “Oh, okay, maybe it is worth it.”
