In Jessica’s Crash Landing, Cael, one of the heroes, believes he’s going to die. The ship he’s traveling in crashes. He survives but believes he hasn’t. He thinks he’s in the afterlife.

In Releasing Rage, my most recent release, Joan, the heroine, believes she’ll soon be killed. She’s the sole female engineer on the battle station she’s assigned to. The Commander and the rest of the males on board want to ensure she’s the last. They plan to make a very graphic and gruesome example of her.
They assign her to a hostile cyborg. Rage, the hero, hates all humans. He brutally murdered his last engineer. The warrior makes it clear that he plans to do the same to Joan. It isn’t a question of if she’ll die but when.
The interesting thing about facing (what she believes to be) certain death is there’s no longer any point being afraid. The worst thing that could happen to a being WILL happen to her. Joan thinks she’s going to die. She’s not afraid of having her heart broken.
She can love without fear, all in, not holding anything back. There’s no hesitation, no debate about whether or not she should wait to touch him, kiss him, love him. She might not have a tomorrow. She doesn’t care if Rage rejects her. He plans to kill her. He can’t hurt her any more than that.
And any upside, any tenderness, any returned feelings will be a bonus, a joy she didn’t expect. She risks nothing and has everything to gain. Joan is determined to grab any bit of happiness out of her remaining lifespan that she can.
I’m humming Tim McGraw’s Live Like You Were Dying while I write this. That song sums up the experience of loving at the edge of death. Every moment is sweeter because you know it might be your last.
