Service to Others

Most spiritual paths suggest that service to others is a vital part of spirituality. I’m not sure what’s meant by ‘service to others’, but what comes to my mind is serving food in a soup line. That’s not for me. For me being of service to others means sharing one’s uniques gifts – like financial expertise, engineering skill, writing or painting – selflessly.

But then ego chirps up and says that’s all ego, that I just don’t want to be another pair of anonymous hands, that it’s ‘good’ to be humble. Then spirit says, there’s a grain of truth there, but only a grain. One’s attributes, talents and gifts are one’s purpose, one’s responsibility to actualize and to share. It’s a cop out, not to use them to serve others.

So to me, ‘being of service to others’ means using my unique talents and gifts selflessly to contribute to a world that works for everyone and everything in it.
