Looking for good books to read?

It is a sad reality that today, as well as being an author, if you write a book, you are also expected to be a salesman and market your book. In the old days, people didn't really know much about writers; the books sold themselves and people would judge a book by its worth rather than by how market savvy the author was. It is really hard for authors today, especially if you don't have a major publishing house behind you. I have found that some readers don't like authors recommending their own books, or trying to sell their books to them. I can tell you that as an author, I know (and I have discussed this with many other authors and most will tell you the same thing) we hate trying to market our books ourselves, but it's a necessary evil.
So, as an author, I find much of my time is spent trying to get the word out about my books, and in trying to do this I have come across many great sites like Goodreads full of people who genuinely love books.
As well as being an author I have always been a bookworm and so I am always looking for good books to read. I have found that being a part of readers' websites is a great source of information about what books to read.
As well as Goodreads, I would recommend www.completelynovel.com , which is a relatively new site; and also, www.bookarmy.com
I have found that the more websites you are active on, the more good books you can find to read; and for authors I would recommend that you should join as many of these websites as possible in order to find new readers for your work.

Gwyn I agree, Maria. My historical family saga, Journey to Tracer's Point, is about going west during the gold rush. All the marketing has been on my shoulders. I've done pretty good and have a growing contact list for the second book, Winds of Change (series), due out next month. Hope you are doing fine. Have a great week.
