BANNED BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ RIGHT NOW

BANNED BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ RIGHT NOW

In the history of mankind, there were some literature pieces that attracted some bad attention for some reason. They were banned from public access and hidden for years. But after ages of labeled as “bad” some books were able to get to the daylight and now it is time to read it all. In fact, some of it are pretty great and it really make people wonder why it was considered as bad before.

In this short article, you will actually learn about some of these banned books which can be purchased and read freely these days. Maybe you will want to read it too? So let’s begin and let’s discover all these books!

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Weird? I bet so, but, in fact, this book was really banned before! This Harper Lee’s only novel is considered to be the greatest works of fiction in American literature. And yet it was banned because of its discussion of rape and a central topic of racism in it. And by the time it was published these topics were pretty hard to talk about in public. But today we can read it freely and enjoy a real good piece of literature.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Most of us loved this amazing and magical trilogy, but it wasn’t loved by everyone, and so – it was banned too. The book has been labeled as ‘satanic’ in some areas and was even burned by members of a church in New Mexico in 2001! But in fact, the author of this book was a real Christian. And many scholars around the globe have found many Christian themes in this trilogy as well.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Since we started to talk about religion and stuff, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was banned for the same religious reasons as well. For over the past two centuries, this book has been outlawed for being indecent, objectionable and obscene. In fact, Christian groups have protested the book, claiming that it’s in conflict with the principles of their faith and many other issues. Although Mary Shelley probably had a slightly different idea while writing it.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

This book beloved by many of us during our childhood was actually banned as well. There is an eternal debate about whether it is racist for its extensive use of a racial epithet mentioned a lot in this book. But book’s supporters claim it actually makes a statement against the racism that was prevalent when the book was published. Good thing today we can read it freely despite the fact that in some states that ‘racial epithet’ was changed in another word.

Ulysses by James Joyce

The real masterpiece of Irish writer James Joyce was banned too. The amazing novel has been called the 20th century’s best novel of all time and that is a fact. But it also been described as the most vulgar, obscene and blasphemous book ever to be banned in the United States! For many years, copies of the novel were seized before they could enter the country. But today we can enjoy this amazing piece of literature freely. Thanks to that!
