Hi! I love your fics, and I had a question! I've noticed a pattern in the way you write John and Sherlock, that they have sex very quickly once they're in a relationship, and while I think that's very in character for them, I was just curious if you think
Hey! Thanks about my fics! And fair question. To put it fairly briefly, yes, more or less. I’ve read stories - wonderful ones! - where it takes them awhile to get there, and in certain circumstances I can find it believable, but I find it more believable if the story is set pre-Mary and pre-Fall. Now that they’ve had so very, very many barriers put between them (often of their own creation) - Sherlock’s faked suicide/two-year disappearance, John’s marriage, the fact that said marriage was to someone who then tried very hard to kill Sherlock, the fact that John then went back to her after that, the possible uncovering of John’s bisexuality (this is a widely-accepted fanon thing but not strictly canon, though it works for me), etc - having all of these obstacles between them, I feel that from this point forward (which is what I write - mid- or post-series 3), when they finally, finally get it together, there will be no stopping it, and that it won’t happen all that slowly. Much as I love a slow build, I do think that they would get physically intimate fairly immediately once that dam bursts.
Sherlock used to think of his body as nothing but transport, as he says in the pilot. But if we take the food as metaphor, Sherlock sure eats a lot more now than he used to. People like the notion of him never eating at all, ever, but it’s really only while actively working on a case, even in series 1. I mean, ASIP ends with Sherlock being the one to suggest they go out and eat together. We see him eating while John is typing a blog entry in ASIB and sneaking a mince pie from Mrs Hudson’s fridge. It’s enough (to me, at least) to suggest that he would certainly have eaten at regular intervals at normal times, just not while actively trying to save his energies for strictly mental activities. He’s not a monk. And then in series 3 we see him eating a whole lot more. Other people have gone into far more detail about this metaphor, but he also eats quickly when he eats (note the toast/crumpet/whatever that is, in ASIB, the chips in TEH, the wedding meal in TSOT). Maybe he denies himself for a little too long and then gorges. Apply that notion to finally getting John at last, and I can’t really see him stinting himself.
Ditto for John, at all times. I can only see him going slowly for the sake of easing a nervous/virginal/formerly asexual(ish) Sherlock into things. I mean, this is a man who blatantly hits on women he’s just met for the first time, including a potential new boss at his bloody job interview! John is - well, this is not even an argument that needs to be made. John likes sex. Clearly. And as I see it, once he finally figures out that Sherlock can and does want that, with him, with or without any internal battles regarding emotional/orientation-related repression, I can’t see him wanting to hold back in any way, either.
And I’m all for that, frankly. Bring on the feast. ;)
