“…We were doing a performance – my first play at school – As You Like It. Benedict was Rosalind, I was Audrey the Country Wench. I ran up to my mum and said, “Mum, mum, mum, was that any good?” and she said: “Yeah, yeah, yeah, you were fine. But THAT is an actor [alluding to Cumberbatch]. He’s going to be the next Olivier….”

I always get a kick out of the fact that a heap of Ben’s earliest roles were female characters (which of course is completely usual at any single-gender school). It’s just so great - he’s one of the hottest tickets out there and his first role ever was as Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Take that, heteronormative jock culture! :P I’ll take the Queen of the Fairies over some beefcake athlete any day.
