I hope Norway to be ready to receive some refugees; article of LRB is fine.Yet, your take on the issue is?
Yes, some are Christians, but most are not. It is the brutal contradiction of attitudes towards women and its future effect upon European culture that is worth mentioning.
Five points many are making for your consideration:
Why are these migrants not going to Saudi Arabia with its common language and culture?
It is 3400 kilometers from Damascus to Munich, Germany while it is only 1900 kilometers to Saudi Arabia with its petro-dollar billions.
Why is the world community and the E.U. and the media not holding Saudi Arabia to the same standards they are holding Hungary, Slovenia and Poland?
Why is Europe not donating more of its support to help centers in Jordan and Turkey?
Photos from the European media primarily focus on showing families with children, but by most estimates, 75% of these migrants are men between the ages of twenty and 35.
Good points; yet, Saudi Arabia has been giving some help to the refugees (thousands of permits in its own territory, and abroad-assistance) over these years.I reckon it should have been a lot more.

100,000 compared to 600,000 in tiny Jordan?
As for the "age" of the male population (some say "war-age"); it implies a sort of "design", even a sort of "conspiracy"; not at all to be discarded. It's likely that some of these (men) are "infiltrating".
Being so, Europe needs a lot discrimination/screening ability . So the USA.

No one here is suggesting a conspiracy theory, simply the dishonesty of the media in using dramatic pictures of children to sway public opinion rather than showing a more accurate representation of the migrant population.
The fact that these migrants are mainly young males does give an added dimension to the problematic effect on their host countries and the future.
Yes, it is "problematic", both for Europe and the USA.But then, you problably know about Kerry's affirmations [even though 2016 is presidential election year!! which means Trump or any other Republican would/will do it differently]:"US to Accept 85,000 Refugees in 2016, 100,000 in 2017, Kerry Says".
By this time you're completely future-scared.
Right?
No. None of this frightens me in the least. I have no horse in this race.I am a history nerd. I am drawn to this because of the contemporary intellectual contradictions and dishonesty surrounding this debate and its long range impact on Europe and European culture.
The lynch pin contradiction is the dichotomy between these two cultures concerning their attitudes towards women.
There is also a culture-clash over homosexuality that the European media has never even dared to whisper about.
The media hardly dares to confront the right-wing in Sweden and Germany that may indeed share the same opposition to gay-rights as the migrants. Holding up the mirror of hypocrisy would be highly entertaining, but the media does not want to open Pandora's box. The media would then be as trapped within the duplicity of its own party line between these two separate agendas just as much as the right-wingers.
The media would love to make the right-wingers look bad but they would embarrass the migrants and compromise themselves by bringing up Islam's virulent animus towards homosexuals and lesbians.
By keeping quiet about this innate conflict, the media has consigned the rights of European women and gays to the back seat in deference to their unquestioning support of the migrants.
I am curious to see if the European Union survives this debate and I can only wonder at what this tidal wave of migrants may bring to European culture for the remainder of the century and centuries to come.

My take on it is pretty much summed up in that article, I think.
We most certainly have a duty to help these people, especially after our completely uncritical intervention in Libya.
At the same time I also agree that the tendency (at least here in Scandinavia) to call anyone who questions the long term demographic consequences racist and xenophobic does more damage than good. Being worried about the future of our hard won and fragile secularism is a valid concern, but since we can't isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, we shall have to place our trust in successful integration, I suppose.
But honestly, what worries me more is the latent right wing extremism that will surely have a new spring as a consequence of all this.
The article has got interesting points; though we all know the left-wing (marxist) standing of the author. I don't understand what you mean by "our"....and "uncritical" intervention in Libya.
To my knowledge, the (West) intervention which ousted/dismantled the Khadhafi regime, was mainly led by France and the UK, with a reluctant USA/Obama in the back side.
"Integration" is a good word.
You're right on right-wing Extremism; I'm waiting for the news in France, Germany ...and Norway too

"...migrants bringing with them a fanatical belief that subjugates all women". Not all of them share that "belief".
I'm glad there's Sweden and Germany, and a few more nations, willing to receive refugees. There are Christian Syrians midst the refugees; if the "belief" question is the only issue at stake.
I'm also glad Obama spoke of receiving 10,000 in the USA.
Where else would these people go??
-how about let them being butchered by ISIS?...or Assad.
