Solomon J. Solomon,(Detail) SamsonSolomon Joseph Solomon RA (1860 – 1927) was a British painter, a founding member of the New English Art Club and member of the Royal Academy. A portrait painter as well as a painter of large canvasses in the academic French style, Solomon J. Solomon trained at Heatherley’s Art School, the Munich Academy and In 1879 Solomon was taught by Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) in the École de Beaux Arts in Paris. ‘Samson’ was painted by Solomon very early in his career and caused quite a stir when exhibited at the Royal Academy. With the model for Samson being the artist’s younger brother Philip, it became Solomon’s, best known painting.
