For Byron Roberts (born 1944) of Stockton, the political anniversaries are important markers in history that the longtime civil rights activist won't soon forget.
He had asked his partner since 1968 to marry him before, but Dennis Merrill (born 1945) didn't think it was necessary, since the pair had already entered into a domestic partnership.
When the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, Roberts decided to ask again.
Merrill said yes.
"Byron wanted to exercise his rights," Merrill said.
They married on September 15, 2014, a day they considered to be the anniversary of when they started dating. “He’s made me so happy for almost 47 years,” Roberts said. “We lived a life of marriage of commitment, love and support. Now legally this is going to be available to all other lesbians and gays.”
