His prose is, in many instances, truly unique. He does have the fallback Drunk Sleazy Guy In LA motif. In fact, it’s his basic structure: Drunk Sleazy Guy In LA, but occasionally he riffs on it brilliantly, “a .45 to pay the rent”, “animal crackers” to name a few.

I actually find it strange he is known more as a poet.

Structurally, I am more interested in him. He abandoned grammar rules and capital letters and wrote like he was sitting there telling you it, in a bar probably. Drunk. He could be talking about peaches or toasters, or, God forbid, gorgeous Mormon vampires, but you’d listen, because whether you realize it or not, half the story is in the telling.
