My reading experience: Part Two

So in part One I talked about my reading experience, or my reading history if you like, from early childhood until my first year at university. From 2009 onwards as I said I started reading almost exclusively books in English (original or translated). Because I was an English Major I had to read books in English so slowly slowly I started reading in English. In the beginning, I wasn't able to understand many things. I needed always to check words in the dictionary in order to understand the passage and move on. Slowly, slowly I started reading more and more books in English and the unknown words were even less, so I was able to grasp the gist of the phrase even with a few unknown words.

The 1st book I finished in English (2008) was Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. I didn't really like it, but it was a start. The second book I completed (2009) was Jane Eyre and it's still on my Top10 books, I read it again a few years later when I had a broader vocabulary. Next I read the monster-of-a-book The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and its sequel World Without End more than a thousand pages each. Those books had the feeling of a historical Game of Thrones set in Medieval England and some parts in France.

So by the end of October 2010 I've read more than 2000 pages of English words, so my vocabulary was expanded even more. So from that semester onwards I started buying books online too (Amazon, BookDepository) with a wide variety of genres, editions, cheap prices and so on. Since then I haven't stopped reading, with only a few exceptions. For 4 years, I was reading exclusively in English but in 2014 I started again reading books in Greek too because I felt I was distancing myself from Greek literature and Greek language books in general. So now in the Anno Domini 2015 there's a balance between Greek and English books but I still read a bit more in English than Greek. I feel I have to stop now or else this post will become an incomprehensible piece of stream of consciousness. So I will see you soon with another BlogPost about books. Hasta mañana
