Every year teachers let me know that the post below about my experience living in Manhattan a few dozen blocks from the World Trade Center on 9/11 has become part of their classroom curriculum, so I continue to post it annually.
Recent studies, however, have shown that many classrooms don’tteach about 9/11 at all, due to the fact thatit’s “too controversial and emotional,” and that it also isn’t a subject covered in text books and on standardized tests, so time constraints forbid it.

So they'll learn about 9/11 from the multiple movies about it instead, that makes sense...
I am always up to hearing about 9/11 from a different point-of-view. Yours, like all of your writing had me so engulfed, I had to remind myself to blink and breathe. Thank you for that amazingly tragic perspective.
Along with it, it's also important to think about the cost of 'catching' the bad guys. The way the 'war on terror' brand was used, making the tragedy an excuse by many, to treat certain countries and well, certain religions in hateful, singular manner to ostracize and make an 'us' vs 'them' distinction. One of my acquaintance who was living there for 6 years had to leave his teaching job because he 'looked' like a 'terrorist' (must be the blasted beard) and he was tired of being treated like one. It's funny (not) because he was an atheist. And finally, terrorism itself is really so bloody confusing to understand. Why is there so much hate in certain groups? Why are such attacks conveniently used by world leaders (well, politicians world-over are nasty)to start wars and 'create' more hatred ? Every attack, every tragedy should be taught, taking into account all perspectives.
