Say Yes, Even When Your Heart is Breaking

According to some legends, Hanuman was given a pearl necklace but, after tearing it apart and examining every last one, threw the gift away saying there was no image of Rama or Sita within, so it was worthless. Asked by an onlooker where one could find images of the pair, he tore open his chest to show they were imprinted on his heart. He carried them everywhere.

We, too, carry our beloveds. And even our not-so-beloveds. This is what makes us who we are. To pretend otherwise is to fall prey to magical thinking, and it doesn’t build our strength.

My optimism and joy doesn’t come from a place where nothing bad ever happens, but where everything is experienced as part of a complete picture. I have no more desire to shield myself from heartache than from laughter. The fear based life I’d have to lead to avoid the former would preclude the latter anyway. So celebrate them that done you wrong, because you live yet to triumph.
