Synopsis
Did a down on his luck former student steal a priceless book? Grad student and cat lover Dulcie Schwartz thinks not and she sets out to prove it”
It s spring break, and Dulcie Schwartz has stayed behind in almost-deserted Cambridge, Massachusetts to concentrate on her thesis. But when a former student turned vagrant, Jeremy Mumbles, is found injured, with a valuable missing book clutched in his arms, Dulcie can t seem to let it go. What was he doing with the book? And why has it turned up after all these years?
With Jeremy now the prime suspect for a series of break-ins in the area, Dulcie is determined to clear the unfortunate former scholar s name. But when she finds a connection between the book he was carrying and her own research into an anonymous Gothic author, the search for clues takes on a new intensity and a new menace.

The Boyfriend Factor
Everyone loves romance. Does he like me? Is it real? Or is he just a lady killer – or, in the world of mysteries, a killer? Putting a little sexual tension in our crime fiction just feels natural.
But when do we take it further?
I’m not talking about sex exactly. Because my books, like the new “Code Grey” (Severn House), are cozies, my characters may spend the night with a sweetheart, and since my heroine and her friends are contemporary college students they do. But what they do during that night remains off the page.
What I am wondering about is whether real romance – the long-lasting kind – has any place in series mysteries. After the first blush of indecision and uncertainty is done, does a relationship add anything to the reader experience?
I’m of two minds. Which works, because I currently have two mystery series going. In my Pru Marlowe pet noir books, the heroine Pru is a bit of a bad girl. She’s got an ongoing liaison with a local cop, but she keeps him at arm’s length emotionally. She’s got too many secrets, and he’s too much of a boy scout for her to ever let him get too close – and she enjoys some steamy flirtations with men from her past, as well.
Dulcie Schwartz, the heroine of “Code Grey,” the ninth in this feline-filled academic series, is on the other end of the spectrum. While in the first few books of the series, she wasn’t sure what to make of Chris, the tall and lanky computer programmer who seemed to like her, by now they’re happily living together. He’s not as available as she would like – he tends to work overnights in the computer lab, which has led her at times to wonder if he is even purely human (this series does have a touch of the paranormal). But when Dulcie found out Chris could also hear the voice of Mr. Grey, the feline ghost who looks out for her, she relaxed. Whether or not her boyfriend is human, he’s kind – and he’s the one for her. And just maybe readers will warm to this kind of steady ongoing romance as well.
